Tuesday Feb 21 - Friday Feb 24

**We are celebrating 100 days of kindergarten on Monday!! Woo hoo! Please read the housekeeping information on what to wear and bring! (Dressing up is optional) ** We welcome all senior kindergartens ;)

Dear Mom and Dad:

Exciting things are always happening in kindergarten. On Wednesday February 22 was Pink Shirt Day. Ask me to tell you why we wear a pink shirt. I drew pictures on a pink sticky and added it to our promise wall in the hub.

Blue/Yellow Team:

We learned the Magic Number activity focusing on how to make the number 5.  Ask me to tell you what 2 numbers make 5. We found Animal Tracks in our classroom one morning, and students went around like detectives discovering who may have left the tracks. We even had a bear walk through our campground… Someone must have left out food.

We talked about I wonder questions for our Zoo field trip. Please check housekeeping for important dates of when each class will be going to the zoo. We learned the hand jive, ask me to show it to you. We learned how to waddle like a penguin (Lesson on what penguins ARE, CAN, and HAVE)

Team Wonder:

We talked about what it means to be a bucket filler. Did you know everyone has an invisible bucket? Even you and even our pets! Ask me to tell you how I can fill someone’s bucket. I can also be a bucket dipper. I learned that when I fill someone’s bucket, my own bucket gets filled and when I dip into someone’s bucket my bucket becomes empty. This is an important concept for me to learn as I understand how my feelings and actions affect others. You can use this terminology and concept with me at home as well as we have been using it in the classroom.

We have been learning about penguins and how they keep warm. Ask me to tell you how they keep warm and what blubber is. We did a cool experiment by feeling what it would be like to be a penguin in the cold. We had a bucket of ice cold water and Mrs. Green made a baggie that was lined with shortening (blubber!) We put our hand in the baggie and put it in the cold water. Ask me to tell you if my hand was cold or warm. Ask me to tell you about the baby chick penguin at the zoo. PM class got to meet him and AM class will meet him on Tuesday!

PM Students went to the zoo! Not all classes went to the zoo yet so we don’t want to give anything away. Ask me to tell you 2 new facts that I learned about penguins and ask me to tell you what my favorite animal is.

Roots of Empathy! Baby Eleanor visited us in the PM. She even wore a pink shirt of course for pink shirt day!

See you on Monday for 100’s DAY!

Love,
Kindergarten

Housekeeping:

On Monday February 27:

Kindergarten will be celebrating our 100th day of school!
We are asking each child to bring 100 things to school in a small zip lock bag with their name on it. We will be using these items to practice grouping and counting to 100 using different strategies.  This item should be small and not roll off a table. We will be doing this activity on Monday February 27.

Some ideas and examples of things your child can bring are:
100 cherrios
100 macoroni pastas
100 smarties
100 marshmallows
100 pennies
100 dried beans

Please have our child count with you! We have been learning a lot about numbers 1 to 10.  Your child should be able to count to 10 one by one, counting each object. Challenge your child to count by tens once they have their group of 10s.

On Monday February 27, because we are at our 100th day of kindergarten, we would like your child to come to school dressed as if they are 100 years old! This is completely optional. Please do not go out and buy anything. You may have some items in your home you can use. Be creative! We welcome it all, accessories, props, have fun with it! Here are some photos and ideas.

Monday February 13 - Wednesday February 15

Dear Mom and Dad:

Highlights of the week:

- Team Wonder: Learning about Henry Matisse and Observing the Trout
- Orienteering in gym
- Valentine's Day card exchange
- My first Carnivale!

It was a short week but a fun fulfilled week with some exciting activities. I enjoyed decorating my bag and box for my special valentine's cards. I can maybe read some of the names on the cards for you. I had my first Carnivale experience! It was so much fun. Ask me to tell you who I buddied up with. It may have been someone from the other diad. We all enjoyed doing winter sports activities. Ask me to tell you what my favorite station was. A huge thank you to our parent council who provided us with hot chocolate after the event!

In gym, we have been doing something called "Orienteering". It is where I go outside and have to look for certain locations using a school map. This is a great skill for me to have, we all became hunters. Ask me to tell you how I did this.

Team Wonder has been learning about snow and why it is important. We learned that snow is important for our lakes and rivers which means it is important for out trout that we are raising in the school. I am becoming a trout expert. Ask me to tell you what stage the trout are in their life cycle. They are no longer in their baskets anymore. Ask me to tell you what they look like. It is pretty exciting to watch them grow. We will be releasing them once they get as big as our pinky finger. Information of where and when the fish release is happening will be posted near the end of April. We will need to start feeding the trout fish feed. Ask me to tell you why we did not have to feed them before when they were in the basket. AM Team Wonder connected with 11 other school that also are raising trout. We connected to a webinar that was live from the Bow Habitat Station. It was like we were having a virtual fieldtrip! I learned about the life cycle of a trout and where they Bow Habitat Station gets the eggs from. We also learned how they clean them and count them.

Team wonder learned all about Henry Matisse and how he drew with scissors! Ask me to tell you about his masterpieces. I made my very own masterpiece using just scissors and glue.

No school until Tuesday Feb 21.

Have a great long weekend and enjoy the weather!

Love,
Kindergarten

Dear Mom and Dad:

Highlights of the week:

-       Swimming!!
-       And riding on a bus of course J

This week: after 4 hours total on the bus, 4 swimming lessons, 4 times changing for swimming, 4 times changing out of our swim suit. (and then for our teachers, times that by two!)We survived our first swimming adventure in kindergarten!

After 4 whole days of bus hopping and pool dipping, we are exhausted but it was so much fun. Swimming is an important skill to learn and also this week, I’ve learned to push myself beyond my expectations.

Ask me to tell you about swimming and what I learned. Ask me to tell you what my instructor’s name is.

A HUGE thank you to all of our parent volunteers. Because of them, we were able to get your child on the bus, changed and on time and ready for the swimming lessons each and every day. We would also like to thank Bob Bahan pool. Their staff and instructors were absolutely amazing and they were so accommodating with us.

Please scroll all the way to the bottom to read our important housekeeping items.

Love,
Kindergarten
